Butterbeer

Butterbeer

This is part III in a mini-series of Harry Potter snacks from the books brought to life (part I is on Honeydukes treats, part II is all about the cauldron cakes, and part IV showcases decadent butterbeer cupcakes).

Last August, my family made the two thousand mile journey to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. Orlando has always been one of my family's favorite vacation destinations. Add in my love (and obsession) with Harry Potter and we all knew that once the park officially opened I couldn't be kept away for long.

On the big day, we woke up at an obscene hour to a bright dawn. While the rest of my family was dragging their feet and speaking in yawns, I was too excited to dwell on my lack of sleep and tired eyes. I had been waiting for this day for years. I was running on sheer adrenaline.

This was my moment.

When I entered the park, I was immediately swept away by the architecture and the detail. The park truly has the atmosphere, look and feel, and sights and sounds (well, if you don't count the occasional woosh from the rollercoasters) of the world of Harry Potter I had imagined. I could have spent hours walking up and down the cobblestone streets simply admiring the tremendous amount of detail that was put into creating this world. Even the subtlest objects, mentioned only briefly in the books, were now here in front of me, fully imagined.

I'm pretty sure I had a grin on my face a mile wide.

Believe it or not, "window shopping" was one of my favorite sights in the park. There were dozens of little shop fronts with windows that each lead into a tiny world. The level of detail was so unbelievable, it was almost overwhelming. I didn't know where to look next. However, I did notice that, like any good wizarding shop, many objects would move of their own volition (but only if you took the time to spot it!).

Cauldron shops, music stores, clothing boutiques—I just wish they had all been real.

After riding the attractions, it was time to sample everything Hogsmeade had to offer. First on the menu, Butterbeers. My family decided that we each wanted one to ourselves (when you stare at them while waiting in line for an hour, you tend to get a bit greedy). Since it was a hot day, we opted for the frozen version. Were the Butterbeers what I had imagined? Not quite. Was it delicious? Absolutely. My sister and I both found them a little too sweet for our liking (that fact that it was nine in the morning may have played into it a bit), but I still managed to drink mine down to the bottom of the glass.

The recipe for Butterbeers I've posted here features a less sweet version than you'll find at the park.

Wizarding World of Harry Potter

We came back to the park later in the evening to see how the look and feel would change after the sun had set. With all the lights dimmed to nothing but a soft glow, the park felt truly magical. Despite the hustle and bustle of busy crowds, for the first time I didn't feel like I was at a theme park anymore. I had been completely transported to the world I could only dream about before.

The castle, lit up in all its glory, was simply breathtaking. Hogwarts almost looked like a painting, with all the gorgeous colors and shadowing of the towers and turrets. If only I could walk across that bridge...

I think these photos tell the story better than I ever could.

This was the perfect ending to what I can only call a perfect day.

Butterbeer ButterbeerButterbeer

These Butterbeers are rich, fun, and fizzy. Your favorite drink from the Harry Potter series is now available to muggles like you! The Butterbeers are created by mixing a butterscotch/caramel syrup into cream soda and then topping it with a healthy dollop of butterscotch infused whipped cream. When taking a sip from the mug, you will get a whipped cream mustache. Trust me, it's all a part of the novelty. Fair warning, these drinks are on the sweeter side, so make sure to bring your sweet tooth along (not that it has ever been a problem for me!).

Butterbeer
Adapted from Huffington Post

Yields 4 servings

1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup heavy cream, divided
Four 12-ounce bottles cream soda, chilled

In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar with 2 tablespoons water. Bring to a boil over medium heat and cook until the mixture reaches 240 degrees F (115 degrees C) on a candy thermometer, stirring occasionally. If you don't have a candy thermometer, bring to a gentle boil and turn off the heat after about a minute of cooking.

Turn off the heat and add the butter, salt, vinegar, and 1/4 cup heavy cream. Stir until smooth. Cool mixture to room temperature before using.

In a medium bowl, beat together the remaining cream (1/2 cup) with 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar syrup.

In each glass, mix together 1/4 cup brown sugar syrup with 1/4 cup cream soda. Pour in the rest of the cream soda until it is nearly to the brim of the glass. Top with whipped cream.

Serve immediately!

We just went there in June and I absolutely loved Harry Potter World (that's what I called it). It was so magical. We had Butterbeer too but we got the aftertaste of Splenda and therefore we were disappointed. I'm so glad to see this recipe here on your site made not to sweet and not with Splenda!!

Very memorable trip! Luxury treats! You deserve a "Well done" for the whole week!

Oooh, lovely pictures! How magical. :)

I wonder if the butterscotch/caramel flavor would work in coffee?? Ha, you see where my priorites lie.

Wow! That sounds like a lot of fun, and the butter beer sounds delish!
I've always been more of a fan of the movies and never read the books (although my older sister hates that since she and my brother read them). But now that I'm older and have more patience to read the books I think I will soon, and I'm thoroughly enjoying the HP themed posts!! :)

Any suggestions on making a spiked version of butterbeer? They always seem to get a little tipsy in the books. I also grew up with HP, and I can't wait to see the movie tonight!! Proof: http://wittyinthecity.com/2011/07/14/is-my-scar-on-straight/

What fun this all looks! I would love to go to the park, it looks like quite the experience. And the butterbeer looks delicious too, I'll have to give it a shot soon.

Wow. I mean really, WOW!!! I never knew this even WAS a place!!!! Goodness me, it looks utterly fantastic! This recipe too is simply fabulous, i just love this post in its entirety :)
We are huge Potter fans, as well - and went to WWOHP last October - it was fantastic. Loved seeing your pictures at night - we didn't go back for that, now I wish I had. Thanks for sharing the recipe - I've really been wanting to make some. I had the frozen version when we were there and it seems like, according to your recipe, i could pour this in my ice cream maker and get it pretty slushy. The only time that hasn't worked in other drink concoctions was when artificial sugar was in the recipe. Can't wait to try this!!

Hi, I dont have cream soda in my country... can i just add carbonated water? :S and maybe more sugar? Cause from what i have seen cream soda is a mix of sparkly water and sugar... Thanks!

Gosh, that sounds like such an amazing day, despite the early start. And I will definitely be trying out that recipe at home.

Wonderful! So much fun! I am a huge fan of HP and cooking, and the sheer fact that butterbeer actually existed made me so happy and excited! Great pictures too! Will definitely make it!

Thanks for sharing some photos of the wonderful world of Harry Potter! Although I'm not much of an amusement park lover, this is one place i have to go! Thanks for sharing this recipe! I am glad your recipe is slightly less sweet!

Dee-- Real sugar all the way! Artificial sweeteners always leave a weird after taste for me. Amen.

Amanda-- You are my kind of lady! I had just been thinking how this butterbeer would make a perfect ice cream float...

Maya Marie-- Please read them! I can guarantee you will not be disappointed.

Witty in the City-- After tasting this butterbeer, I know that spiking it with rum would be absolutely phenomenal. Fast and easy way to turn this drink into an adult beverage!

Lisa-- That sounds like the greatest idea ever. I thought for quite awhile on how to make a frozen butterbeer, but it never occurred to me to pull out my ice cream maker. Definitely let me know how that turns out!

Ginnette-- Martha Stewart has a simple recipe for making your own cream soda (http://www.marthastewart.com/348771/cream-soda-syrup). This would be the perfect substitute if you can't find cream soda where you live (in fact, since its homemade, it probably would taste even better!)

One of the local pubs in Belfast has turned into the Leaky Cauldron in honor of the last Harry Potter! They serve both an alcoholic and non-alcoholic version. The alcoholic version is simply Harp (a pale Irish lager) and butterscotch schnapps. Unfortunately, they don't have the amazing froth that this one has, but they were pretty tasty too! Excellent job Kristin on all the HP stuffs and everything else, you're amazing!!!!

This is rather awesome, I'm thinking of having a Harry Potter themed party just so I can make that much butterbeer now lol. I went to WWOHP the summer before last and it was AMAZING, though it was rather weird to be in over 100 degree weather and see snow all over everything. We also found one of the few spots that the amazing Hogwarts illusion is broken - just when you get out of the Hogwarts ride, you can kind of tell that the bridge is about 4 feet tall, but it's amazing what the people who built it have done because, 98% of the time, Hogwarts looks huge and distant and magical. But yeah, back to the matter at hand, the butterbeer at WWOHP was good, but it was a bit... weird. eh. I'm looking forward to trying this recipe, thanks!

Gosh I'd love to make a visit there one of these days! You lucky duck. ;)

For a "grown-up" version of everybody's favorite Harry Potter drink, a butter beer recipe from the movie theatre where I saw HP7.2 the other weekend:

2 parts cream soda to 1 part butterscotch schnapps (more or less to strength preference), serve on ice. I don't know how they did it there, but the way they prepped/poured the drinks they came with about an inch and a half tall thick, foamy head from the cream soda. Yum yum! Can't be too hard to achieve considering how many they served at each showing. ;)

For a spiked version of butter beer:

Mix cream soda and butterscotch schnapps! You could top it with whipped cream, but it tastes plenty buttery on its own.

My friends and I made it for a party using a cauldron as a punch bowl. You can make it as strong or as mild as you like.

Cheers!

We went last October & immediately looked for a Butterbeer recipe when we got home. We have since made the same recipe you did several times including the frozen version...in our Cuisinart Ice Cream maker for 20 minutes to get it nice & slushy. Now we have the perfect treat for our Harry Potter parties, which we have each time my son finishes reading another book & we watch a movie! Now I'll have to check out your other Harry Potter treats!

Person-- I had no idea the bridge is only 4 feet tall. It seems so huge! Oh, the magic of architecture...

Behnnie & Sierra-- Thanks for the great ideas on how to make a spiked version! Love it!

Mrs. Diner-- I'm glad the frozen version worked out so well for you! I think it's wonderful that you can share the magic of Harry Potter with your son through parties (and, of course, food).

Witty- Actually, butterbeer came from a very old tradition, initially called buttered beer. Here's a link to a recipe I frequently use at my medieval reenactment gatherings. We like it on cool evenings around the fire before the gypsies get their hips moving... or maybe it's to help get their hips moving ;)

This is a fabulous recipe! I just made it a few minutes ago, except my beverage turned out pink (because of the Cream Soda). Not the lovely caramel colour you got. I also think it could do without the apple cider vinegar. Any tips on how to get rid of the pinky-ness? Thanks! xox

My sister and I went to the WWOHP last November. It was fantastic! We had the butterbeer. I, too, loved it, though my sister found it too sweet. It was served with at least an inch of foam on top. When my sister drank her butterbeer a magical thing happened. Although the level of the liquid in the cup dropped several inches as she drank, the amount of foam on top increased. So, no matter how much she drank, the cup stayed full. It was incredibly fascinating. The level of everything in my cup, however, just went down as I drank my butterbeer. Maybe my sister is not a muggle!

Hi, I wanted to come back and share with you that i made this butter beer without cream soda. I used one glass with sparkling water and another one with tonic water... and it was SOO SOO SOO Good!!!

I'm awful at following recipes, but somehow I managed to make this last night. I was afraid that I wouldn't like it, because I'm not big on butterscotch or whipped cream, but I when i tried it, I felt like I was transported to the Three Broomsticks. :) It turned out delicious! And your recipe was so easy to follow! My boyfriend and his mom were also very skeptical at first, but they immediately liked it after the first sip! I'm excited to make it for my mom and sister today!

I had first planned to spike it with butterscotch schnapps, but because it was so late, there were no liquor stores open. I do think that I will be trying it soon though. I also can't wait for the winter to try this warm!!

Anyway, thanks for sharing this with us and for making it so easy to follow!! I can't wait to have more! :)

The park looks like it would make a great family vacation. I completely understand how you could be so excited. I think we all like to fantasize about what it is like in other worlds or lives. Where did you stay and would you recommend it? Oh, and the Butter Beer sounds yummy. I will definitely by making the adult version.

Marshall-- I stayed at the Pacific Royal (arguably the cheapest place to stay on site) and it was nice. Best part of staying on site? They give you early access to the park, meaning you have an hour to do as you please before they let in the general public! This was great for Harry Potter because as soon as they opened the park doors the lines were 3 hours long for everything. I'm not sure I would have gotten to see everything there if I didn't have the luxury. But yes. Definitely recommend. The Hard Rock Hotel is also a great place to stay if you have a little extra cash. I hope this helps!

The butterbeer was delicious!! I was a little skeptical at first while making it because I thought it would be really sweet. But I followed the recipe, (I used dark brown sugar), and it tasted amazing. It's smoothe and you taste a hint of the butter, but it is not overpowering. The temperature is just right and it's a great sweet treat. I'm having a fall wedding and thinking of using this recipe in small shot glasses at the dessert bar.

Having never done more than use a microwave in a kitchen until this summer, this recipe was one of my 'oh please don't let me burn down the kitchen' experiments. It was so much easier than I thought and absolutely delicious, and my friend and fellow HP fan didn't burn down the kitchen. Thank you for a lovely recipe!

I literally JUST booked my tickets! I cannot wait to go to HOGSMEADE!!! My kids are going to flip their lids. They're a little older so it'll be nice to spend some time all together again in Happy Harry Potter Land! I will definitely be making Butter beer to get us all in the mood. I love it! Thank you for making a slightly less sweet recipe, that will be better for us :)
